However, due to the country\u0027s rapid economic development, imports of crude oil have increased dramatically in subsequent years, reaching an alarming level of 51.29% in 2009. This means that more than 50% of total oil consumption in China has needed to be imported primarily from Africa and Middle Eastern countries. Furthermore, since more than 75% of oil imports are supplied by shipping, this means that shipping security and energy self-sufficiency have become an urgent issue for China. Based on an environmental management perspective, in this paper, I focus on sustainability in the Chinese economy, as discussed above, and attempt to clarify the variation and interdependency in Chinese energy security issues by using the DPSIR framework. In this preliminary investigation, under China\u0027s present energy portfolio, I posit that: firstly, China\u0027s structural risk management system needed to be optimized as a hedge against the energy security risk of an increasing future dependency on oil imports and also from geographical ubiquity of coal; secondly, it is the risks I mentioned above that force the Chinese government, as a potential incentive, to promote eco-innovation through the Coal-Electricity Integration Project; finally, as a potential synergy between power generation and consumption, plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) into the grid will not only enhance coal-fired power plant efficiency, but also improve the energy efficiency of renewable energy. Therefore, that is why I use case studies on the Baoya New Energy Vehicle and the BYD Auto to demonstrate how eco-innovation creation will affect the corporate growth in China.
