We developed the demonstrative report writing scale DRAW9 (Demonstrative Report based on Academic Writing 9) consisting of two factor-9 items, namely, a regulation strategy factor and a help seeking strategy factor. These were based on a factor analysis of data from 144 college students writing argumentative reports. The scale structure was analyzed in relation to the report thesis. During the report writing activity, the data showed students were more likely to use the help seeking strategy on topics that were not related to their own designated classes than on class-related topics specified by the teacher.
