In particular, he specialized in the history of Japanese political thought. I will consider his understandings of“ liberty” and“ democracy” from 1936 to the first half of 1940’s when he experienced wartime Japan as a youth. These two notions appeared at the beginning of the modern age and became fundamental principles for modern society. Therefore, as a preparatory inquiry, it is important to examine Maruyama’s evaluation of modern society.
