In the case of Ireland, however, it was governed as an English colony with a Lord Lieutenant installed at the top of the Irish administration, Dublin Castle. This study examines the Irish administration during the period from the Act of Union to 1922, when twentysix counties of southern Ireland became the Irish Free State, a dominion of the British Commonwealth.\n　During the period focused on here, the Irish executive included the Lord Lieutenant, the Chief Secretary, the Lord Chancellor, the Attorney General and the Solicitor General. The Chief Secretary was appointed by the British government, who often was a member of the British cabinet. While the Parliament sat the Chief Secretary resided in London. During his absence from Dublin, it was the Under Secretary who was given full responsibility over the administration. The Lord Lieutenant and the Chief Secretary together with the British Home Secretary, decided matters of Irish government policy.
