Here, focus is\nplaced on four railway engineers who received university education in the middle of the 19th\ncentury at universities in the UK. This study introduces important documentation, such as\nUniversity Calendars and school records, which provide information concerning their curricula,\nprofessors, and tuition fees.\n At the time, engineers in traditional UK universities, for instance Cambridge University\nand Trinity College Dublin, were required to receive a solid liberal arts education. In contrast\nat younger universities, for example in the Department of Applied Science of King’s College,\nLondon, engineering students were provided theoretical and practical instruction.\n When considering the contributions they made to the development of Japan’s modern\nrailway system, the above information concerning their education is significant. Although\ncivil engineers wishing for membership in the Institution of Civil Engineers were required to\nhave grounding in the liberal arts, the Institution did not consider their school careers until\nthe beginning of the 20th century. The first Engineer-in-chief, Edmund Morel, advised to the\nMeiji government to establish the Kobu Daigakko (the Imperial College of Engineering). But\nthere is no evidence of the four engineers’ contribution to the curriculum, partly because they\nengaged in Japan very short period (24 months on average), and three of them were in poor\nhealth.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"1345-1448","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"林田, 治男"},{"creatorName":"ハヤシダ, ハルオ","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"HAYASHIDA, Haruo","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-12-12"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"157_189_林田先生.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"4.2 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"157_189_林田先生","url":"https://osu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/1973/files/157_189_林田先生.pdf"},"version_id":"5cc9923e-fff3-4ab0-8189-7e3f549e552c"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"UK railway engineers in Meiji Japan/ UK university engineering curriculum/ Liberal arts/ Institution of Civil Engineers.","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"UK railway engineers in Meiji Japan/ UK university engineering curriculum/ Liberal arts/ Institution of Civil Engineers.","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"技師と大学─来日した英国人鉄道技師の大学教育","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"技師と大学─来日した英国人鉄道技師の大学教育"},{"subitem_title":"What the Engineers Studied in 19th Century UK University:The case of Oyatoi railway engineers in Meiji Japan","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"10","path":["414"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2017-12-12"},"publish_date":"2017-12-12","publish_status":"0","recid":"1973","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["技師と大学─来日した英国人鉄道技師の大学教育"],"weko_creator_id":"10","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-20T13:26:40.443534+00:00"}
