This is clearly expressed in the intricate technique used in his masterpieces, such as The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying, but he began the technique even before becoming a novelist. Faulkner wrote romantic poetry early in his career, and Margaret Yonce recognizes the technique even in "The Lilacs, "one of his earliest poems. However, Yonce does not analyze the personal pronouns, which are used extremely ambiguously in the poem.
