内容記述 A core concern in the political thought of Yokoi Shonan (1809-1869), Confucian scholar and samurai from the Higo (Kumamoto) Domain, was the idea of Sandai ("Three Dynasties"). This idea, however, shows a change in his thinking in the first half of his forties. This paper attempts to examine the continuities and discontinuities within this idea, between his thought in his thirties and that of his forties and fifties. In his thirties, he followed the example found in the thinking of orthodox Confucian scholars and idealized the politics of the three dynasties, the Hsia, the Yin, and the Chou in ancient China, as the standard for good government. In this earlier period of his intellectual thought, this idea meant that benevolent rule by political leaders should be practiced with a self-discipline in everyday life. He tried to realize this in the Higo Domain and proposed economic and agriculture-based policies to control demand and prices. The moment for the reformulation of his ideas was when he started communicating with samurai retainers of Echizen (Fukui) Domain and an intensive reading of Kaikoku zushi (An illustrated gazetteer of the maritime nations), a Chinese geography of the world compiled in 1842. Starting in the first half of his forties, he goes further back to the ages of Yao and Shun, the legendary emperors before the three dynasties, adding political principles of their behavior to his idea of " Three Dynasties". With this new development of his idea, he advocated open and friendly discussions between lords and their vassals, and based on this proposed political reforms in Echizen Domain and Tokugawa Shogunate. His reforms embodied the following proposals: (1) democratic politics founded on open discussions among political leaders, (2) employment of talented people from all over the country, (3) the promotion and encouragement of industry among the common people, (4) the improvement of flood control projects and infrastructure, (5) the foundation of a navy, and (6) the commencement of foreign trade by the government. His policies founded on the idea of "Three Dynasties" changed during his life, but its basic elements, namely self discipline of leaders and benevolent rule, continued to be at the core of his thinking since his thirties.
